The Bluebird Diaries – Vol. 2 No. 19

Last time we showed some funny pictures from Day 11 of our baby bluebirds’ young lives. Unfortunately Day 12 starts the period where looking inside the nest box is ill-advised. The babies are mobile enough to leave the nest, but still about four days too young. So the idea is to stop monitoring so the babies don’t get spooked and leave the nest box too early.

We respect this line of thinking, so we won’t have any more baby pictures until fledge-day (coming up very soon!) Meanwhile, we were able to catch some interesting feeding pictures of the parents. Enjoy!

Mr. Personality!

We’ve discovered this female bluebird has a single white wing feather. It’s not missing, it’s actually white. It’s evident in this picture, on her right wing.

“I’m so handsome!”

“And I know it!”

For those of you who also follow our Caterpillar Corner, no, this is not one of our caterpillars!

Pretty girl!

You may remember this is a new bluebird couple, not the same parents as those who raised the first 2012 nesting. I have to admit I didn’t warm up to these two as quickly as the others. They were more distant, didn’t seem to like us as much, and (perhaps) chased away our original pair. But, over the past month I’ve come to love them just as much. It’s always difficult to explain the unique personalities we discover in our birds. Most people think it would be impossible to tell ….”they’re only birds.” But they’re not. They’re our birds. 🙂

We’ll be back in a few days with another update! Thanks for following along!
