Fantastic progress on the bluebird nest!! They’re moving so much faster this time, and if I had to guess (always dangerous!) I’d say it’s because of the weather. Bluebirds often postpone nest-building and/or incubating when the weather is too cold to support babies, and I’m assuming that’s why it took so long to build the first nest. At the rate they’re moving this time, we might have eggs this week!
The female has been super-busy, bringing huge mouthfuls of material only to drop most of it before making it into the nest box. But, then she picks up what she drops and uses that too!
The very best part is that they’re bringing their babies around while they work! Bluebird babies usually stay very well hidden, but lately they’ve been somewhat out and about! This little guy thinks he’s getting a meal but this is nesting material the mom is gathering. (If you look very closely behind the baby, you’ll see a second baby hidden in the shadows!)
It’s common for babies from the first clutch to help the parents feed babies born the second time around so we’re hopeful we’ll continue to see them as this round progresses! We’ll be back in a few days with another update. Thanks for following along! We’ll leave you with a picture of the nest progress.
