As we’ve mentioned previously, Killdeer babies leave their nests almost immediately and we have basically one day to see them before their parents take them out of the yard into some taller brush where they are safer and can find more bugs! We’ve been lucky enough to host many nestings over the years and we don’t think we’ve ever missed a hatch! Here are some more pictures of the cute little guys.

By the way, the babies in the pictures above were on our patio, not five feet from our sliding doors. Killdeer are very tolerant of humans. The mother was with them but not hovering.
Our current nest is happily progressing, with the parents sharing incubation duties as usual. We expect a hatch date between May 17 and May 21. We’ll be back in a few days with another update! Thanks for reading!
