We apologize for the lateness of today’s post, but we wanted to be able to include all the pictures!
The babies fledged (left the nest) today! I thought they’d be here at least one more day but that just shows what I know! We began seeing one of the babies peeking out first thing this morning. I think it’s a girl (and even if it isn’t, we’re going to call her “she” for now!)
Mom rewarded her with a nice juicy bug.
By noon, we knew she’d leave the nest box today, it was just a matter of time.
Another tasty treat!
By 12:30, she was ready!
Mom was there to help (with a treat!)
She left then, and both parents followed!
We couldn’t get over how far she flew. I should mention this is the first time we’ve actually had a chance to see a baby leave the nest box. No matter how closely we thought we were watching in previous years, we always missed them! It was amazing. That baby flew across three yards and on top of a neighbor’s two story roof. Both parents stayed with her, only coming back to check on the remaining babies once or twice in the following hour.
By then, baby #2 (we think this one’s a boy) wanted out!
This little guy also flew much further (and better!) than we expected. He ended up on a roof next door, waiting for dinner!
Unfortunately we had to leave during all this excitement, and by the time we got back at 6:00 the other three had also left the nest box. We’ll definitely see them again (they’ll be back to bathe) but right now it’s bittersweet. We miss them already even though we’re thrilled the first nesting of 2012 was such a success!
We’ll post again if we are lucky enough to catch pictures of them returning to visit, but until then, this ends the initial 2012 installment of the Bluebird Diaries. Thank you so very much for following along, it was great having you here. We hope you’ll drop in on our Killdeer Chronicles and Swallow Tales to keep track of our other nestings. And, should we be lucky enough to host a second round this summer, The Bluebird Diaries will certainly be back!
