The Bluebird Diaries – Day 39 (April 28, 2012)

We covered the hole. You might remember from way back on Day 1, we drilled a hole in the top of our bluebird box this year in order to discourage House Sparrows from attacking the nest/parents/babies. Well, we learned a few things.

  1. It didn’t work. We needed a sparrow spooker for that.
  2. When it rained, well, the rain when in the hole. (Duh!)
  3. It’s going to rain from tonight until Thursday, and that’s not a good “welcome” for naked defenseless baby birds! In the heat of the summer they might appreciate the refreshing mist. But not when it’s still in the 30s at night.

The female stayed in the nestbox during the renovations, with the male close by watching from the fence. He promptly came over and pecked at the new roof, which is exactly what he did with the sparrow spooker. Then they both began coming and going as if nothing had changed. But something has. Namely, she stayed dry last night! It poured!

Tune in tomorrow for the next update!
