The Bluebird Diaries – Day 31 (April 20, 2012)

Today was a rainy, cold day which brought lots and lots of bird activity to our yard. We kind of like when it rains (or snows) because it brings around lots of wildlife, stocking up on food I suppose! Today we saw cardinals, house finches, goldfinches, native (good) sparrows, killdeer, grackles, a tufted titmouse, starlings, a blue jay, our bluebirds, and a pesky hawk I’d rather not have seen. Thankfully he didn’t leave with anything. Hawks are beautiful and we know they need to eat too but we’d prefer they hunt elsewhere!

The starlings were the only visitors who annoyed our bluebirds. I’ve mentioned before they are not a threat since they can’t fit inside the hole in the nestbox, but our bluebirds don’t know that so Sheldon spent some time chasing starlings today. He’s a good protector, even when he doesn’t need to protect!

Today we’re starting a new column, The Killdeer Chronicles. We hope you’ll give it a look, especially when things are slow in the bluebird world! Thanks for reading, and we’ll catch up again tomorrow!
