Egg number two!
She laid it about 10:00 this morning, and we were thrilled. You might remember yesterday we had to install a sparrow spooker because of the threatening house sparrows. We saw the bluebirds accept it fairly quickly but the true test of acceptance is if the female continues her laying cycle, which she has. Very rarely a female bluebird will be afraid of the contraption and it will spook her too. But not usually. Bluebirds are generally very accepting and tolerant. In fact the male is usually more skittish than the female, and he too was just fine with the spooker. Still, we were very happy to see egg #2!
The house sparrows came and went all day today, mainly staying several yards away from the box but still interested. We saw a male house sparrow attempt to approach the nest box a few times, hovering and fluttering around but too afraid to land. That’s what we want, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
We’ll be back with another update tomorrow!
