The Bluebird Diaries – Day 14 (April 3, 2012)

The bluebirds are spending more and more time here every day. That, paired with the size of the nest and the amount of time they spend working on it, leads us to believe there will be an egg laid shortly. Possibly as soon as tomorrow morning! We’ll be on the lookout!

(See the thickness of the nest now? And the notable indentation for the eggs? We’re getting close! This picture was taken after most nest building activity had completed for the day.)

The bluebirds arrived right on time this morning, just after 7:00. They worked on their nest until nine, then on and off for the rest of the day. The male is notably more attentive today. He seems to be singing and “dancing” more than the previous days. (The “dancing” is this funny little wing-dance the male does, where he spreads one wing out in what appears to be a mating ritual.) They were at or around the nest most of the day today, which is a change from previous days when they’d be gone more than they were here.

We focused today’s photography on the female finding twigs and weeds for her nest. She usually stays right in our yard to find her material. She’s got plenty to choose from! šŸ™‚

As I mentioned, the male seemed extra-attentive today. He monitored all nest-building activities!

Tune in tomorrow to see if she’s laid an egg!
