Today was the best nest-building day so far! Both bluebirds arrived around 7:00 a.m. and put in a busy three hours of work before leaving by 10:00. They did some more building at 1:00 p.m. Not nearly as much as their morning shift, but this is the first time we’ve seen them work in the afternoon. They came for a final check of things around 5:00 p.m. as usual, but didn’t work on the nest at all. We’ll feature the male (Sheldon) today in our pictures since he’s been getting the shaft lately!
Aw heck, we’ll include the female shots too! She was busy today and deserves some recognition of her own!
You’ll definitely see a change in the nest structure in today’s picture:
The floor is finally covered!
Sad news about our duck eggs. This morning we found all of the eggs broken outside of the nest. We’re assuming the predator was a raccoon. The female returned at her normal time this morning and investigated the remains for some time, but left without laying an egg. Although we are disappointed, we’re glad she decided to try elsewhere since this particular location didn’t turn out to be a good one. We hope she’s able to find a nice safe place to nest.
