Even though it was only in the 40s when we woke up this morning, I could tell immediately it was a milder day than yesterday. Maybe the winds were shifted, maybe it was more humid … whatever the reason I had a feeling it was a perfect day for nest-building. And what a day it was!
We’ve named our bluebird couple: Sheldon and Amy. (Couples from previous years included Dharma and Greg, Will and Grace (we know), Lucy and Ricki, Mimi and Red).
We briefly spotted the male bluebird before we left the house this morning, but not the female. By the time we got home (9:30) their work day was in full swing! They remained until about 11:00. As usual the female did most of the work, collecting sticks and twigs from our yard and others, while the male stood guard. Occasionally the male would bring a “snack”. We even spotted him dropping a fly down the hole we drilled in the top of the house. Handy! Enjoy these fantastic pictures our photographer took this morning. They all feature the female, Amy Farrah Fowler.
And here’s our male, Sheldon Cooper, with dinner:
Both birds returned for an after-dinner visit this evening. Although we didn’t see any further nest construction, they did stay longer than they have any evening so far.
Duck update: Four eggs. She’s on a typical mallard one-egg-per-day schedule. We expect her to start incubating in about another week. She’s cute as a button and we’ll probably name her too! Any suggestions?
